Sick as a Horse

Ethan woke up this morning with a little cough and as he would say, "I am sick and I need to watch movies and drink bubbly juice!" His tears were convincing and I propped him up on the couch with "bubbly juice" (Sprite, Gatorade, and water) and popped in a movie.

After the movie we made clothespin horses because "H" is for horse! We got the idea from Wild Animal Babies, a magazine that his Grammie gets for him (they have such GREAT craft ideas... you can find the horse pattern here ). I could tell he was feeling a bit better because he was down-right crazy fun! When we had cleaned up after the horses, I introduced him to the resurrection eggs and HE LOVED THEM! We have gone through the eggs a dozen times... and he is picking up on the Easter story... and I love that! Easter is such a special time of the year and I want him to understand WHY it is so special! We also spent a lot of time playing a borrowed game "Don't Break the Ice"... gotta add that to the wish list! It was so fun to have a "sick" morning with Ethan... Eden even gave us a special gift by sleeping extra long - so we had plenty of one-on-one time!

My Blessing

Eden has been going through a tough little stretch... I am not sure if she is teething or just not feeling well. She demands to be held all day long and is mainly irritated and clingy even while being held. If anyone else holds her she screams and has a look of betrayal that could make your heart stop beating. This morning I was praying for her and thinking about my day and preparing myself to not get anything done and it dawned on me... she is my blessing! This season of clinginess has felt like a million years, but it is just that - a season. She may do this for a few more months or years, but it will end (I honestly can't imagine her as a teenager clinging onto me like this!). And she is my blessing because she is teaching me so much. Lessons I am not sure I want to learn, but I need to. Denying myself and my personal space... denying what I would like... denying want I think I need to get done... denying my precious (few) hours of sleep as she wakes me lots of times during the night. I am trusting that God is in this situation and hears my prayers and will give me the strength to keep holding her, singing to her, kissing her little upset brow, and loving her through this season! How I am clinging onto her moments of joy, her occasional smile, and her little babbling noises... she is my blessing.

Movie Night

Tonight... we vegged! And it felt good! It has been a busy week. Today we finished up our homestudy interview (the next step in the adoption process) and afterwards I felt totally exhausted. I realized that I cleaned the house for all it was worth all week long in preparation for this weekend. All those little "projects" that I had to do on that infamous list in the back of brain... I worked on this week. I sorted, organized, and cleaned everything I could (NOT like my house is even that dirty or unorganized). So.... Micah was in Augusta around lunch time to check up on his ministry team and when he called wondering if he could rent some movies for the evening - I was thrilled!

So we had a great, family-bonding movie evening... it was restful, needed and wonderful!

38 Weeks Old

This week Eden has been copying things that we do... like when we smile and shake our heads at her she smiles and shakes her head. When I do signs for being all done with meals she mimics me by throwing up her hands and making noise... it is cute! She still continues to be glued to me every minute of the day and I continually have to remind myself that this is for a "short" season. Some days her clinginess is hard to handle... especially when she thinks that I am her personal treadmill to walk all over... grabbing my nose, poking my eyes, pulling my hair... etc! This is a short season, this is a short season, this is a short season, right? Every day she is getting stronger and it is incredible to see her leg strength - she is extremely flexible, athletic, and mobile. And I shouldn't say this, but her main hobby right now is blowing out diapers!!!! She sometimes gets two baths a day! Oh my child... you are a blessing in more ways than you will know!

What We "Do"

Been thinking a lot about the word "do". It is easy to write about what we do. You can take a picture of a "do", you can describe a "do" to a perfect stranger.... etc. Pretty much in all situations a "do" determines value and success or failure at the lack of a "do". But sometimes we can get so caught up in "doing" that we miss out on sharing who we ARE. I guess it is a lot less vulnerable and personal to share a "do"! We have been DOING a lot this week and the internet has been annoying and slow so I have been avoiding it... We made googy, glitter-glued G's, played with shaving cream (extensively), enjoyed the warm weather, watched our buddy, Eli for 2 nights and almost 3 days (his mom had emergency eye surgery), had all the staff up for polka-dotted peach pies (that is a mouth full), went to play group, ate a lot, cried a little (sometimes a lot)... AND I even got to have a girls morning with a dear friend (shop and go to an eye appointment BY MYSELF!), and now that the weekend is upon us and we are in the middle of our homestudy interview (not to mention Micah has an service day with his outreach team... Saturday). WOW... and that was JUST THE HIGHLIGHTS!

It is easy to share a "do"... how are we doing? There is so much on our hearts and minds that it would be impossible to share it on a public blog.... personal issues, hurt feelings, tired minds and bodies, a little discouragement, hours of discussions, ministry strains, work demands, etc. I wish I could just spill my guts, but know there is a gut-ful and we would ask you to keep us in your hearts, minds and prayers. We are "doing" oh so well... heavy-hearted, but well-cared for, well-feed... WELL-BLESSED!

Up the Wall

Here is Ethan a year ago in the climbing room... he tried the harness on, but wasn't thrilled with the whole climbing deal. I kept asking him if he wants to "try" it again, but up until a couple weeks ago he would tell me that it is "too dangerous."
Well... in the past week or so Paige got him to try it again and so now he thinks it is pretty cool now. He doesn't have the hold onto the rocks and climb part, but he is overly thrilled with the repelling part! If he could hang up in the air the whole time he would be quite pleased with himself.... what an adventure - I love it that he has this avenue to explore.

Welcome Spring

We have been talking about the first day of spring for awhile... this morning when I told Ethan it was the first day of spring he wanted me to lift him up so he could see out the window. When I asked him what he was looking for he said, "I want to see the flowers coming up." I think he was disappointed to see that a blanket of snow was STILL on the ground. It is hard to tell a child what spring IS when spring doesn't come to Montana until JUNE! So we have been trying to make it look like spring inside. We made a fun cherry-blossom tree (idea from a Baby Center email). We cut out a tree out of brown paper, glued it on blue paper, then glued popcorn for the blossoms and green yarn for the grass. We are ready for spring... if only Montana could get the memo!

Fun Friday Painting

Have I ever mentioned that I have an obsession with paintbrushes? I love them... and I usually have a cup of them by the sink all the time. I like the way they look and I love USING THEM! For awhile I didn't paint - mainly due to insecurities... "What if it doesn't turn out?"... then I remember that if it doesn't turn out you PAINT over it... and now I find myself painting a lot more and am hoping that the love will transfer to Ethan (maybe one day!) - until then... we paint often! I have had some major paint projects lately...

Ethan's paintings: I have painted some pictures for Ethan's room. He loves trucks - any kind... so here were a few I chose to paint. I copied the designs from coloring sheets I got off the web.

And here are some painting (there are 2 paintings in this pic) I painted for the MWSB Hob Nob Coffee Shop. They are giant (4 ft by 3 ft ish?). I got the design from some plagues I found at Walmart. So yes, I am a copy cat... not very good at coming up with thing on my own ideas.... but I did have fun! So there they are... Happy Friday!

37 Weeks Old

This week was marked by a constant runny nose, grumpiness, clinginess.... and all other things not pleasant! But Eden is still precious to me in every way! Last night she was having problems breathing due to her extremely plugged nose and I just held her and rocked her for a long time. I was praying about some major things in my life right now and it was sweet to just hold my little girl and thank God for her every breath... she even fell asleep for a moment or two - which is a miracle. Life is so delicate and precious.... and so each moment is a gift from God.

Pigtail Cutie

Eden's hair is getting long enough to put in a pigtail. I think she is the cutest thing ever! It is exciting having a little girl... I really look forward to all the girly things we will get to do together!
Here is a better view of the pigtail... just pretend she is smiling in joy!

Rethinking our Days

I know I have shared before that Ethan and I work on little things every day - the alphabet, colors, memorizing verses... etc... and it was going really well until a couple week ago when he got tired of it and then it became a fight everyday.... so I stopped. I DON'T want him to hate school/learning! So I am rethinking how to go about teaching him. I can be so serious and focused so I am trying to "study and learn" how to play a little bit more. I have been researching games, activities and crafts online and getting some good ideas... now I just have to try one a week or something like that. I love being a student of him and learning how to love him and invest into his little life!

Feasting on Chocolate

I have not had chocolate since July (periodically, I would try a chocolate chip only to reap hours of consequences). For some odd reason both of my kids FREAKED out when I ate chocolate while breast feeding them. Eden was a little bit more sensitive than Ethan. I found EVEN a peanut would send her into screaming sessions.... so the last past 8 months have been mainly peanut, dairy, chocolate, and spicy free (aka TASTELESS!!!) I kept telling my Bible study that when I weaned Eden we would have a big chocolate party. Even though Eden decided to wean herself a few months before I wanted... I decided to look at the positive side and have been enjoying tastes I have long forgotten! Last night was fun... although I am thinking if I don't see a piece of chocolate in the next 8 months I will be okay. We had chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, carmel popcorn drizzled in chocolate, oreo truffles, and chocolate fondue! It was over the top, but so worth the extra 5lbs we all (probably) gained! While we snacked on the richness... we snuggled up to "You've Got Mail." So fun!

When it is all said and done I "guess" I am thankful for the "gift" of breast feeding.... because it is one of the hardest thing I have ever done and I had to fight for every day. It taught me the essence of self-sacrifice and love.... and if I had to do it all over again - I wouldn't jump up and volunteer, but I would do what is best for my babies!

Moroccan Flatbread

I just had to share a new recipe for Moroccan Flatbread that I stumbled upon in my Cooking Light magazine. I was trying to find a good recipe for all our Mexican dinner party left overs. I found this recipe and used the beans, rice and meat to fill these pouches (instead of the onion, parsley, and spices). So delicious... except when I make them again I will make sure to flatten them a bit more because the edges were a little bit doughy! Here is the recipe if you like to try them:

Dough:
1/2 teaspoon yeast
3/4 cup plus 1 Tablespoon warm water
2 cups flour
3/4 teaspoon salt

Filling they suggest:
2 cups onion
1/2 cup finely chopped parsley
2 Tablespoons olive oil
2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
1 teaspoon canola oil, divided.

Mix the yeast with the warm water - let stand for 5 min. Work flour and salt into dough and then knead. Shape into a ball and let rest for 15 min. Divide into balls and let rest for 30 min. Combine all the other ingredients except the canola oil and after flattening the dough ball... (roll very thin!!!) put 2 tablespoons fo the mixture in the middle of the dough and fold the dough around it. Heat canola oil in a pan and cook each pouch about 2 minutes or more on each side. Serve warm with colorful bell peppers, olives, and feta cheese... enjoy!

Fun Friday

Every fun Friday deserves it's own set of glasses! Don't you think?

36 Weeks Old

Eden is 36 weeks old today. This week she has officially weaned herself... refuses to have ANYTHING to do with breast feeding (Thank God for pumps and being able to gradually wean... instead of her cold turkey weaning plan). So I am throwing a chocolate party on Saturday night! Oh yeah... I am eating cheese, spicy foods and all those other delicious things that have been on hold since her little tummy would not handle them. She has gotten herself on a very consistent schedule and so this momma is happy! This week has flown by!

Tales of Nap Time...

Ethan is moving towards sleeping in his big boy bed... but most of the time he insists that he needs to sleep in his crib. I don't mind. I've read about my friends who deal with their kid getting out of bed several times a night or the fights they have to get their kids to stay in bed at the beginning of the night... and I am just thankful that I put him in his crib and get him up when I am ready for him to be up. It is a nice arrangement.

Yesterday, Ethan told me he wanted to sleep in his big boy bed. So I laid him down and told him "have a good sleep" and left the room. I heard him playing around/talking for about 1.5 hrs, but I was just so curious to see if he would actually go to sleep.
It got pretty quiet and then about the time his nap is usually up I went in to look at him. He had pulled the walls down on his bed "fort", tore down all the twinkly lights..... and took all the clothes off his (my old) "doll", but he was asleep in his bed... hum! A little grumpy that night, but he did it! I will call it a success! (I wired up the curtains and secured the twinkly lights a little bit better and maybe we will give it another go today).

Dinner Club: Mexican Night

So this might be cheating a bit, but all the dinner club people just HAPPEN to be in Micah's Ministry team (Imago Dei).... so last night we had them all up for fajitas... It was great because Micah made his famous guac and grilled chicken marinated in the most amazing lime marinate... (from our friends in Nevada... thanks so much for that amazing recipe addition we have adopted into our family) - I made homemade refried beans, sopaipillas, rice, etc. I loved having the group up because I got to hear their stories as they chatted away about their trip. Sounds like their trip was amazing! I love being able to foster community through an avenue of delicious food... it was a great evening!

Dadda's HOME!

Micah got home last night... I love that! I kept Ethan up and he was almost asleep on the couch, but when he heard his Dadda he became a live wire! My favorite part was that as soon as we were in the living room Ethan dove at him and said, "let's wrestle." It is amazing to watch their relationship... I have overheard Ethan telling Micah, "I love you, Dadda!" a million times. I love it that Micah is able to travel with his ministry team (and from the sounds of it they had a GREAT trip), but I am also so much more thankful that he comes home!

2.5

It is Ethan's 1/2 birthday, today! He is 37 1/2 inches tall.... so that means he will be about 6 feet 3 inches tall when he grows up (the exact height of his daddy). We went on an adventure today to celebrate. Since it was getting close to lunch time I packed a little lunch and we had a picnic on the snow bank by the river. Ethan ran back and forth carrying little rocks and big rocks to throw in the river. At one point he gathered a whole line of rocks and then threw them in one by one. He was definitely in his element! The weather was perfect... I am sure enjoying this stretch of springish weather - I am sure more snow is right around the corner!
So for today... Happy 1/2 birthday, Ethan Cade!

The End of a Visit

My parents left this morning and it was sad to see them go, but fun to think about ALL the things we did while they were here. What a busy week! Everyday we went on fun, outdoor-exploring adventures! We threw lots of rocks into puddles and the river... we found treasures on the road (rocks, a necklace, bolts... etc). We went to Mel's Diner in Augusta for lunch and ice cream... we ate pies, soups, and other lots of other yummy meals! We took lots of brightly colored baths (thanks to fizzy bath colors)... etc, etc, etc! I am so thankful that my parents took the time to come out and visit us (especially while Micah was gone so that I wasn't alone all week). This morning when Ethan was asked if his Grandpa and Grandma had left he said, "Yes! They are going home to get their trailer and then they are coming back." Made me smile... they will be back in a few months and I can tell Ethan will be counting the days. (Thanks Mom and Dad, for all the talks, help with dishes and laundry.... and the KIDS!)

35 Weeks Old

Eden reached the 35 week mark (yesterday)... she had a full week of fun with her grandparents and it was fun to watch her light up with smiles every time her Grampie or Grammie came up the stairs. She is growing in leaps and bounds! She is still in love with standing up and her balance is getting quite good! She is working on transferring from one object to the next... (so determined to get around). Her new hobby is catching flies in mid air and eating them before I can reach her and then she just throws a fit when I try to fish them out of her mouth... it is truly disgusting! This week she tried french fries ... yeah, I know... anything that get remotely near her goes in her mouth... she is as fast as lightening! She loves wrestling with her brother and no-one can make her laugh like he can (even if he is beating up on her!).... What a great week! (One more note: thanks Mom, for all these fun pics!)

8 Months Old

Eden is 8 months old today. Wow... could it be? She has been all smiles today...
so it has been delightful!
Just had to post this pic of Ethan and Eden wrestling....
I think Eden is gonna give Ethan a wedgy!

A Visit

Micah is in Denver with his ministry team. They are working with the homeless for the week. We were planning on going with them, but then decided it would be best to stay home. On a whim I called my parents and asked if they could come and stay with us for the week... so they came. Ethan has been loving the company and "new play mates". He and Grampie have gone on a lot of adventures (aka hikes) and Grammie has been giving him a bath in the evening and reading him stories and playing games with him. He is soaking up all the attention and love. I am thankful for this time. It is hard being so far away from family and so when we have these moments we love them. I am amazed at how the dishes seem to get done.... I usually wait until the end of the day when the kids are asleep and then I do them, but my parents have been doing them after every meal... imagine that!
My mom made soup for lunch... and dad grilled burgers last night... hum I am getting spoiled. I am not used to all this help and so I keep having to remind myself that it is good and it is not just because I am a slacker! We have lots of adventures in the next few days... and I am sure I will share them with you all.
